Authenticity

Are these originals?

Originals are far and few between, and the rare few that are left, are in museums or held by collectors. Having seen a few originals, we at Bauhaus Classics find them to be quite ugly as they are so old and technology back then didnŐt allow for the perfection that we can attain today.

When people ask ŇAre these originals?Ó what they really mean is this reproduced by the manufacturer who held the certificate from the designer?Ó All certificates from the Bauhaus era have expired in the last 10-15 years. Do these manufacturers want you to know this? No. Go ahead and ask them if they hold certificates any longer to reproduce this furniture? Please refer to Questions you need to ask before making a buying decision. You will be glad you did.

Questions to ask before making a buying decision:

Where is the furniture produced?

Before purchasing your Modern Classic furniture, make sure that the reproduction you purchase is of Italian origin and even then it must be from a reputable factory. BEWARE OF THE COPIES THAT ARE PRODUCED IN THE FAR EAST OR SOUTH AMERICA! Some suppliers are displaying photographs of reproductions of the classics (some taken from this very site) and are shipping inferior knockoffs rather than quality reproductions that represent the original designs. These knockoffs are far inferior in quality, as well as dimensions and scale. They even go so far as to say Italian leather which they have purchased from Italy, but then manufacture the pieces elsewhere. Be aware: everyone uses catch words, like 'quality' and 'beautiful reproductions done right'. Be sure that you are comparing apples with apples and not apples with oranges. The price is also a factor you usually get what you pay for and in some cases you can pay the same prices and still get a cheap knock off.

What kind of leather is used?

The answer is top full grain, aniline leather. Aniline leather comes in different grades. "Top grain" is the upper surface of a cowhide with its individual, natural appearance. Only hides from animals that are not too scarred can be used to produce this leather. Some manufacturers will use inferior leathers that need to be sanded and artificially textured in order to hide scars or marks. With time this kind of leather dries out and eventually cracks to show their original marks. See Leather for more information.

What is the level of microns used in the chroming process?

The answer is 28µ (µ = microns). This is the highest level available: not 30 or 35. It is physically impossible to have more. If the person you are dealing with doesnŐt know, it is probably low quality. If they had 28µ, they would surely be proud to tell you. Or they do know and donŐt want to tell you how low it is. Inferior products use 8-14µ. If you're lucky maybe 20µ. These products will begin to peel, chip, crack, and rust in as little as 1 to 2 years. See Chrome and Steel for more information.

Quality and Materials

Craftsmanship

Our Bauhaus Furniture is meticulously handcrafted by skilled craftsmen. Their level of expertise is unsurpassed. These techniques have been handed down from father to son and take years to master. We are proud to present to you superior reproductions of the modern classics from the Bauhaus era. In our production process we are committed to strict quality control and adhere to the exact design specifications as accurately as possible. We use only the finest materials available, which are approved by Oringini, the Italian Design Society. See About Bauhaus Classics for more information.

Leather

Our leather is top full-grain aniline leather from Italy. "Top grain" is the upper surface of a cowhide with its individual natural appearance. Only hides from animals that are not too scarred can be used to produce this leather. Some manufacturers will use inferior leathers that need to be sanded and artificially textured in order to hide scars and marks. With time this kind of leather may crack and show their original marks. Over time our leather wears beautifully and actually becomes softer with use.

Our leather is drum-dyed in order to ensure complete color penetration. Other manufacturers use a simple vat-dying process in which only the surface is dyed. This can color the leather in an uneven manner. In the event of a scratch you will see brown leather. Further more, these inferior leathers dry out and begin to crack.

A note about Ponyhide: It is actually cowhide and only referred to as ponyhide. It comes in three colors: black, black and white, and a black, white and brown combination. These high quality hides are natural and there is no way to control how much or how little of a color is on the pony hide. That is up to Mother nature. We can not hand pick the hides.

Chrome and Steel

A high gauge, pre-stressed, pre-buffed stainless steel is used and is chrome-plated with 28µ (microns) in a multi layering process, including silicone coatings for rust protection. All chrome parts are polished to a perfect mirror finish, which insures a finish that will not chip, crack or peel. Some manufacturers use only 8-14µ (microns)

A note about the tubular framing that is typical of Bauhaus design: On a high quality piece, the steel will be molded in one continuous piece for clean seamless joints: a mark of craftsmanship. (See photos at right.) The cheap re-edition welds, cut pieces are joined together at a right angle; this is an inexpensive way to cut corners literally and figuratively.

Cushions and pillows

Our cushions and pillows are filled with polyurethane foam and polyester fiber, and where applicable natural down feathers are added as well for a softer more comfortable seat.

Safety Code

Our furniture pieces are approved for all safety codes in the United States. Our products are certified by the California Technical Bulletin 133 (Cal 133) a full-scale seating test that applies to seating units in high-risk public areas. Please specify at the time of order which code applies to your project.
